China Escalates Retaliation, Raises Tariffs On U.S. Goods To 125%

On April 11, China's Tariff Commission of the State Council issued a new announcement stating that, effective April 12, 2025, it will raise the additional tariff rate on all imported goods originating from the United States from the previous 84% to 125%.

In addition, Chinese authorities noted that, given the current tariff levels, there is virtually no market acceptance for U.S. goods entering China. If the U.S. continues to raise tariffs on Chinese exports, China stated it would simply disregard such actions.

The Ministry of Commerce emphasized that the U.S.'s repeated imposition of excessively high tariffs on China has become a mere "numbers game," with no real economic impact. Instead, it only further exposes Washington's strategy of weaponizing tariffs and using economic coercion as a form of bullying-ultimately turning itself into a global laughingstock. If the U.S. continues this tariff numbers game, China will not respond. However, if the U.S. persists in taking substantive actions that harm China's legitimate interests, China will resolutely counter and stand firm to the end.

This marks the third round of retaliatory measures taken by China in the escalating trade war with the United States, underscoring Beijing's firm stance in the face of mounting unilateral pressure from Washington. The announcement comes just one day after White House officials clarified on April 10 that all Chinese exports to the U.S. are now subject to a minimum 145% tariff rate.

Over the past two weeks, the tariff war initiated by President Trump has rapidly intensified, erecting more and more trade barriers, shaking global markets, and threatening economies around the world. Companies have been forced to make abrupt, large-scale order cuts and are now hoping for some form of de-escalation.
